Dallas, like most of Texas, can get incredibly hot in the summer (we're talking triple digits y'all). Winter can sometimes get incredibly cold, Dallas is prone to ice or sleet from December-February, something you definitely want to consider for the safety of your guests. Spring can sometimes be lovely and temperate, but it very much depends on the year- there are often heavy rain storms and even tornados. Dallas is right at the bottom of hurricane alley- and we definitely see those effects. Big storms, heavy wind, and power outages are the norm in the Spring. That leaves us glorious Fall. Fall, specifically October is typically the most temperate of Dallas climates. But that has created a very isolated busy season for the local wedding industry. Prices might be higher and dates limited. So if you want to get married in October- act fast!!
If your wedding date is 1.5-2 years away, go with October. If you're a little late to the planning game go with an indoor venue in June or November.
some of my favorite
Dallas has a wide variety of different wedding venues, from hotel ballrooms to grand outdoor barns to industrial warehouses. Whatever your vision is, Dallas will likely have something you'll love! (Unless you want to get married on a mountain... you'll have no luck in that department).
getting around in
Luckily, Dallas is one of the easiest places to fly into. One of the countries biggest airports, DFW International Airport, is conveniently located about 20 minutes North West of Downtown Dallas. Dallas Love Field, the main hub of Southwest Airlines, is only 15 minutes from downtown. You and/or your guests will have no problem finding a variety of flights in and out of Dallas.
Dallas has many highways and toll roads, which makes getting around easy. The main highways are 75 and DNT which run North-South, 635 and PGBT, which runs East-West, and I-35 which takes you from Laredo through Austin, and all the way up to Oklahoma (avoid I-35, it's the worst). While using the tollways (DNT, PGBT) aren't necessary, they significantly reduce your travel time. Since Dallas is so sprawling, be prepared to drive 20-30 minutes to get anywhere.
Popular ride sharing apps such as Lyft and Uber are prevalent. There is also the DART our "metro" system which runs alongside 75, but I haven't had much luck using it. Depending on the area that you and your guests are staying, walking can be an option. But it's not very common at all. If you're used to living in a walkable city, be prepared for a culture shock.
where to stay
Dallas or better put, the DFW metroplex, is incredibly sprawling. There are lots of towns and cities that aren't "Dallas proper" but still can be 20 minutes away from Downtown Dallas, confusing, I know. Here are some of my favorite places in "Dallas". And keep in mind when I say North Dallas I mean North of the metroplex.
Uptown- Great location, super walkable lots of great restaurants and bars
Lower Greenville - One long strip of awesome restaurants, night clubs, and rooftop bars
Deep Ellum - The biggest night scene in Dallas, more dive bars, live music
Bishop Arts - South of downtown, and a relatively new location. Lots of great shops and restaurants.
Grapevine- Grapevine is my favorite of all the west cities. Downtown Grapevine has lots of restaurants and outdoor trails. Very close to the airport.
Irving - another big city North West of Dallas, most notable is the Mandalay Canal walks, similar to a much smaller San Antonio Riverwalk.
CityLine in Richardson- City Line has a small cluster of restaurants and shops, with the Aloft hotel. There's a nice nature trail within walking distance.
Legacy West - a super big shopping center with tons of restaurants and a massive food hall.
Since Dallas is such a massive city, there's tons of things to do! From museums to restaurants to bars, you'll definitely find something fun!
Restaurants: Meso Maya (authentic interior Mexican food), Yama Sushi (go on Tuesdays for great specials), Whiskey Cake (try the Whiskey Cake, trust), Whistle Britches (try the hoe cakes, trust, trust), Legacy Hall (massive food hall with tons of stalls and live music), Lucia (fantastic pasta), Uchi (incredible, swanky sushi)
Museums: DMA (a free!! art museum), Perot Museum (Nature and Science, they have fun adult nights), Dallas Aquarium (more like a zoo)
Bars: Truth and Alibi (night club hidden behind a candy shop), Parliament (the best cocktails, super busy get there at opening!) SODA Bar (okay drinks but the views of downtown are worth it), Atwater Alley (small speakeasy) Thompsons in Fort Worth (another speakeasy, fantastic drinks), Truck Yard (outdoor seating, great vibes)
Parks: Arbor Hills Nature Preserve (great open park with lots of trails), Arboretum (beautiful botanical garden), Klyde Warren Park (great urban park downtown with food trucks and games), Grapevine or Lewisville Lake (big lakes where you can rent boats for the day), White Rock Park (lakeside park with bikes and paddle boards to rent, great view of downtown)
Shopping: Legacy West (big outdoor shopping mall, lots of upscale stores and restaurants), Knox-Henderson (small boutiques), North Park (indoor mall with fine art all around)
"We cannot say enough good things about Leah and her wonderful wedding photos!"
She took the time to plan out a detailed wedding day schedule with us and to get to know our preferences for photos, so she could be sure to capture the moments that were most important to us. On the wedding day, Leah kept to the schedule and made taking photos so fun! But my husband and I were nervous about taking couples photos, but Leah made it so easy and fun. Many of our family members commented on how efficient the family portraits were. We were able to get all the photos we wanted and more! We are so happy with all the wonderful photos we received from Leah. We highly recommend Leah Goetzel Photography!
"Put simply, working with Leah was a dream"
Our wedding celebration had to be postponed due to COVID. However, she was able to capture both our original wedding day in March as well as our newly scheduled wedding celebration in July. Leah was always professional while also managing to seem like someone you've known for years. She's a calming force during a hectic & chaotic time. On top of her reassuring demeanor, she captured both days perfectly. Her positivity carried us through the uncertainty of both days and working with her was an absolute joy. We can't wait to work with her in the future and would recommend her to anyone looking for the most amazing partner on your special day!
"beautiful and so worth it! leah made our day so special."
She knew exactly what to do and how to get the shots we really wanted. Leah and her assistant, Zain, helped make the day run smoothly and held our hands through the scheduling process. She also has a great "bride guide" on her website to help her clients know what to expect on their big day as well as tips leading up to it. Leah was respectful and polite but stern and took charge when necessary to keep the day running smoothly and include all of the memories in the photos. I actually cried when we got our sneak peek gallery because of how well they turned out and how they brought me back to the day, all of the emotions and love. Could not recommend Leah Goetzel Photography more, so impressed.
"Leah was an absolute pleasure to work with! We HIGHLY recommend!"
I don’t know where to begin! Leah was awesome with our wedding and engagement photos. She kept me calm the entire day of the wedding, and even offered me her tide stick to get the stain out of my wedding dress (which worked). She went above and beyond the normal duties of a wedding photographer, and she made sure I stayed hydrated all day! She was excellent with staying on my day of timeline, and she assured me that we were right on schedule. We HIGHLY recommend Leah! She does not disappoint!
"Leah is the kindest soul you will ever meet."
She truly puts her clients first and will go through great measures to make sure they are comfortable and happy with their photos. I was on a budget for photos and I do not exaggerate when I say that she is the most talented photographer I know. In my opinion she's the best of the best and for a great price. I could not recommend her enough I'm so happy to of met such a wonderful person!
"you'd be crazy not to book leah. she was simply amazing!"
From the engagement shoot to the bridal portraits and the wedding she went out of her way to make everything perfect! Her kind heart and outstanding professionalism made working with her so easy. Leah isn’t there to just capture pictures, she is there to capture moments and emotions that will last a lifetime. If you are looking for a photographer, your search is over. Don’t pass this girl up!
"one of a kind! everyone... leah is a must hire photographer!"
She knows the perfect angles and poses and is especially talented when it comes to delivering the final results!! It was my first time working with a professional photographer and I was not let down by the quality or pricing Leah has to offer! Literally smiling as I write this! I wish you so many more clients Leah!
"My husband and I had such a great experience with Leah!"
The pictures turned out beautifully and she got them to us so quickly. There is such a great blend of candid and posed, and we love how natural they look. She is so kind, mindful, and considerate. She is very professional and helped make our wedding day stress-free. We can't recommend her highly enough. Thanks again Leah!
"you need leah."
She was a great asset to our big day. Not only was she on time and organized But she was prepared with literally everything. She had ideas for photos and when it started to rain on our outdoor reception she had a bunch of umbrellas for our guests and when we forgot the supplies for the exit she had some confetti for us to use! She was amazing, communicative, and prepared. Best person for your big day.
