Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places for engagement photos. The lake is about 2 hours from Denver but is worth every minute of the drive. If you are wanting a gorgeous lake view with mountains in the backdrop– Sprague Lake might be the perfect place for your engagement photos.

In order to take engagement photos at Sprague Lake, you’ll need a permit (as with most locations in Colorado). The permit is $50 and is required for any sort of paid photography or portfolio building. The permit does include the entry of one car into the park. As a Colorado wedding photographer, I will take care of securing all permits for your engagement session.
Sprague Lake can be super busy on the weekends (as with most locations in the park). I highly recommend scheduling your session on a weekday or aiming for a sunrise session! The sun can be super harsh at the lake until about 30 minutes to an hour before sunset, that’s when the sun starts to dip behind the mountain.

Sprague Lake is conveniently located off Bear Lake Road. You will turn off Bear Lake Road to Sprague Lake Road, which will take you right to a parking lot of about 50 cars. From there it is a straight, flat 5 minute walk to the lake. The loop around the entire lake is 1 mile and will take about 30 minutes. It is nearly completely flat. There are restrooms at the parking lot.
Clara and Michael decided to have their engagement session at Sprague Lake at sunrise, which I loved (after I chugged 3 cups of coffee) because there was absolutely no one around. I also love the light at this location at sunrise, it’s more direct but the mountains pop in a way that they don’t during sunset.
