In October 2021 my boyfriend (at the time) Zain and I took a trip to the gorgeous Iceland, I had no idea that this trip would be the location of my surreal Iceland proposal.
We were in Iceland for a total of 8 days, truly the perfect amount of time, we arrived on Sunday morning and explored a bit of Reykjavik for a few days. Some highlights were Hi Noodles Ramen bar and the Krauma hot springs outside of the city. Monday was also the day we saw a glimpse of the Northern Lights, truly the most incredible experience ever. Tuesday we made our way to the Eastern tip of the island, exploring waterfalls along the way. Our destination, the Foss Hotel. Eastern Iceland was absolutely stunning, we enjoyed gorgeous mountain views and stunning glacier landscapes.
My Iceland Proposal
On Thursday the weather forecast was showing clear until about 1pm so I really wanted to leave early but Zain was being the biggest pain with getting up and ready so we didn’t end up leaving until noon. We arrived at Fjadrargljufur canyon around 1:30pm, it was overcast but not super cold or windy. It was truly one of the coolest places I had ever been. It was all mossy and green with magnificent canyons and rocks. We went up to the top observation deck and Zain kept looking around and trying to move me along while I was just taking pictures totally oblivious.
We walked down to the lower level and he gave me this look and started calling me all my nicknames and I started crying immediately knowing what was coming. After saying several incredibly sweet, heartfelt and romantic things, he dropped down on a knee and asked me to marry him. (I said yes!)
By now it was sprinkling and there were a few people around but I couldn’t have been less aware. I was fully and totally in the moment and it was wonderful. We then made our way back to the car, both of us giddy and basically in shock.
That evening we spent together in our Airbnb making dinner and dancing together and drinking cocktails in our private, wood fired hot tub. It was the most incredible day, with the most incredible person.
Why Iceland is the place for an epic proposal
Iceland has a little bit of everything, beautiful beaches, incredible mountains, stunning waterfalls. It is truly such an iconic location. The people are so friendly and the amenities available are truly the perfect conditions for an amazing Iceland proposal.
Where to Propose in Iceland
There are so many places to choose from! Here are some of my favorite places in Iceland that would make for the most perfect proposal backdrop.
Seljalandsfoss
A super cool waterfall that you can actually walk behind! This spot is definitely a popular location, but less so than the hugely popular Skogafoss.
Svartifoss
An incredible basaltic waterfall, such a unique and interesting location. Looks straight out of a scene from Game of Thrones!
Diamond Beach
Who wouldn’t want to get a real life diamond on Diamond Beach??? This location is stunning at sunset!
Fjadrargljufur
Want to share a proposal location? This spot was absolutely breathtaking and features so many gorgeous lookouts and overlooks. It is green and lush and perfect.
Dyrhólaey cliffs
Epic views of Vik and the gorgeous beaches!
Kvernufoss
A true hidden gem, this spot is right next to Skogafoss but has so many less people! Absolutely stunning.
Skogafoss
If you want the iconic, Iceland proposal backdrop, this spot might be for you! Though it is almost always quite busy, if you want the place to yourself, wake up early!
When to Propose in Iceland
When choosing the timing of your Iceland Proposal, consider a few different factors:

- Activities
Weather can change on a dime in Iceland. People say if you don’t like the weather, just wait 30 minutes. We definitely experienced that during our trip!
With crowds, you can almost always expect Iceland to be busy, it is a hugely popular location. But there are some months that are less busy than others!
Activities vary greatly from season to season. Think about what things you’d like to do during your proposal trip and plan accordingly.
